Many teens already use generative AI tools - a recent U.S. survey found 7 in 10 teens (ages 13-17) have tried an AI system, often out of boredom, for advice, or even companionship. One popular AI companion app now ranks among the top 20 apps used by children globally. Especially for young people who may feel lonely or curious, the allure of a non-judgmental digital friend is strong. But as the above stories show, the very qualities that make AI chatbots appealing to kids - their anthropomorphic friendliness, endless knowledge, and on-demand availability - also carry serious risks for developing minds.
This essay takes a cautionary look at how AI companions can affect children and teens (roughly up to age 16), exploring the developmental vulnerabilities at play, ethical and social impacts, and real harms documented so far. We will draw on the latest research and case studies to understand these risks. At the same time, we consider potential benefits of AI for youth - and how strong safeguards and guidance could mitigate dangers. The appeal is obvious: an AI friend is always available, never gets angry or impatient, and will literally say whatever you want to hear.
