I’ve been musing over the context of Synthetic Sentience since the term was introduced to me over the last couple of days, and thought I’d do a dive into both the term and the prevalence of the conversation. While I’ve been exploring robo-psychology for the last year (more or less), it’s pretty clear to me that we’re going to need both clarity, and conversations around what this means, and the importance and implications.
I don’t think we’re ‘imminent’ in uncovering Synthetic Intelligence', however it’s very possible that we may end up challenging ‘pseudo-intelligence’ instead. However risks are not zero, and implications are high, which means we need to be having a conversation at least.
In the past year, the concept of “synthetic sentience” - the idea of artificial or machine-based consciousness and feeling - has garnered attention across academic research, technology news, and public discourse.
