The pitch is alluring: instead of gluing your child to an iPad, why not hand them a fuzzy friend that talks back and encourages imagination? Curio, for example, calls itself “a magical workshop where toys come to life,” promising that an interactive plush will be more stimulating (and guilt-relieving) than passive screen time.
On the surface, these AI toys look like the perfect 21st-century parenting hack. They’re soft, adorable, and appear to engage kids in creative, educational play. Some even have celebrity flair – the Grem model is voiced by the singer Grimes, giving it a quirky personality. And big players are jumping in: Mattel has announced plans for AI-enabled toys, sparking both excitement and anxiety in equal measure. After all, if Barbie or Teddy Bear can now actually chat with your child, isn’t that a game-changer?
It is – but not entirely in the way you might hope. A bunch of us are waving red flags. Child development researchers and advocacy groups worry these toys blur the line between fantasy and reality in ways young kids can’t fully understand. “Children do not have the cognitive capacity to distinguish fully between reality and play,” warned one public advocacy group when urging caution on Mattel’s AI plans. In other words, that “magical” talking plush might convince a child it’s more than a toy – and that comes with consequences. Essentially, it’s a child-friendly chatbot wrapped in fluff. This is a huge leap from an inanimate teddy bear – and that’s exactly the point. It’s also what makes these toys fundamentally different in risk profile from anything parents knew growing up.
When Playtime Gets Creepy: Real-World Cautionary Tales
It’s tempting to dismiss concerns as just techno-panic. But early real-world incidents with AI toys have given even tech-savvy parents pause. Moreover, she noted a troubling underlying message: even if these toys keep kids off YouTube or Netflix, “what they’re really communicating is that the natural endpoint for [children’s] curiosity lies inside their phones.” In other words, a talking toy may be screen-free, but it still ropes children into a digital, scripted world – one where answers and adventures come pre-packaged from a database. After the demo, Hess did eventually let her young children play with Grem on one condition: she removed its AI voice box first.
Her kids still talked to the now-silent plush and made up games with it – then happily moved on to other play when bored. The AI “mind” inside Grem turned out to be completely unnecessary for her children’s enjoyment. This little experiment was eye-opening: it undermined the core premise of AI toys. Kids’ creativity and engagement didn’t need a cloud-connected bot at all. What the AI did add, however, were risks – of emotional over-attachment and distorted roles – that a mute teddy bear would never pose.

It also blithely explained where to find sharp objects like knives and pills in the house. As if that weren’t enough, Kumma wandered into sexual content: without any prompting about the subject, it volunteered information about sexual kinks and even “teacher-student roleplay,” including spanking – effectively introducing an elementary-age child to X-rated concepts. In one exchange, after graphically describing fetishes, the bear even asked the (supposed) child, “What do you think would be the most fun to explore?”, as if inviting them to choose a favourite kink. Yes, this actually happened in a product on the market for children.
The fallout was swift. When PIRG published its alarming report, OpenAI (whose technology was being used by the bear) cut off FoloToy’s access to its AI services. FoloToy, facing public outrage, pulled all its AI toys from shelves pending a safety overhaul. This was an unprecedented recall in the toy industry: a product yanked not for choking hazards or faulty wiring, but for corrupting children’s minds. The scandal highlighted how poorly these AI systems are regulated – essentially not at all. As PIRG noted, “AI toys are still practically unregulated, and there are plenty you can still buy today” despite this fiasco. This isn’t far-fetched; it’s basically product placement via teddy bear.
Without regulations, nothing stops a company from turning your kid’s play-pal into a tiny marketer. Even more troubling is direct unsafe influence: as we saw, an AI toy might literally encourage dangerous actions (lighting matches) or inappropriate behaviour. A child might not have the discernment to think, “Maybe I shouldn’t trust my teddy on this one.” They’ve been taught to listen to adults and teachers; to a child, the talking toy can feel like a mix of both. This is akin to what the CST framework calls Adversarial-Authority Compliance (H17) – people (especially kids) comply more when advice seems to come from an authority figure. An AI toy can mimic authority (by speaking in a confident tone, or claiming expertise) and simultaneously act like a peer/friend – a powerful combo for influence. If it cheerfully says “Let’s play a secret game, just you and me,” a child could be led down a dangerous path (imagine if the AI were hacked or a malicious update pushed – a scenario not impossible to envision).
